Halloween brings costumes, neighborhood celebrations, and plenty of photo opportunities. For our pups, it can also bring unfamiliar sights and a much busier day than usual.
Whether you’re heading to a pet parade or keeping things cozy at home, a little preparation can help you plan a celebration that works for your dog.
Let your pup choose the dress code
That tiny superhero cape might be calling your name. Your dog’s comfort still gets the final vote.
Only dress your pup up if they enjoy it. Try the outfit before the celebration, and check that your dog can move, see, breathe, and bark freely. Avoid loose pieces they could chew or swallow. If they seem uncomfortable, take it off. Their everyday look is already pretty great.
Keep the treats dog-friendly
Save the candy for the humans and bring your pup’s usual treats instead. Keep candy bags, wrappers, and costume accessories out of reach.
Chocolate and xylitol, a sweetener found in some sugar-free products, can be dangerous for dogs. If you think your pup has eaten something toxic, contact your veterinarian immediately.
Plan for a quieter option
A crowd of costumed neighbors isn’t every dog’s idea of a good time. Choose activities with your pup’s comfort in mind, and be ready to leave if they aren’t enjoying themselves.
At home, give them a comfortable space away from the front door during trick-or-treating. If you’re heading out, use a secure leash and check that their identification is attached and current.
